What's So Different About Railroad Bridges Anyway?
Why does the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and most Major Class 1 Railroads insist on consulting engineers having significant experience with railroad bridges and significan familiarity with the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association (AREMA) Manual For Railway Engineering before working on a railroad bridge? Why is the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification not to be used for railroad bridges? Why isn't any Senior Bridge Engineer with extensive highway bridge design expertise not qualified to design railroad bridges just because he hasn't designed one in the past? What's so different about railroad bridges anyway?
The first chapter of the new book "Railroad Bridge Engineering" (Under Development) is intended to answer those questions and this Railroad Bridge Engineering Resource Center (Also Under Development) is intended to provide railroad bridge engineers with the resources needed to help develop the required high level of railroad bridge design expertise.
